Bio
I have keen interest in Parkinson’s disease (PD) research in both translational and basic science aspects since last 20 years and would like to further contribute to this field. In this quest
my team has contributed to 1) Translational research involving identification and validation of potential biomarkers for patients of PD with cognitive impairment 2) A non-neurotoxin-based animal model for PD with cognitive impairment and 3) Novel animal models to understand resilience to PD. Recently
we attempted identification of protein biomarker(s) in CSF of Parkinson’s disease
PD with cognitive impairment
normal pressure hydrocephalous patients and controls. Our current investigations are focussed on examining their pathogenic potential by intraperitoneal administration into adult C57BL/6J mice. My team also attempts to 'understand the molecular and cyto-morphological mechanisms of aging and age-related neurodegenerative disease'
We found that pathways involving Lewy body formation
endoplasmic reticular stress
apoptosis and growth factor receptors showed sub-threshold neurodegeneration in Asian-Indians. We also demonstrated the role of glia in aging and PD. In the last decade
we have established a mouse model to understand the factors of resilience to PD; viz. dopaminergic neurons
developmental and age-related neuronal death
growth factors
alpha-synuclein levels
motor behavior
striatal field potentials
glia/interneurons
organelles etc.
